Many schools and youth settings experience adversarial relationships between youth and adults. Negative peer cultures also spark bullying, ridicule, peer victimization, and destructive conflicts between cliques of youth. Rebelling from pro-social values, youth engage in “deviance training” as peers romanticize and reinforce rule-violating behavior. This not only occurs in segregated programs for youth at risk, but in mainstream schools and communities as well. This issue explores promising interventions to create a climate of respect and responsibility.
